MPI Speed Watch program: We will be looking for volunteers to help run this program in the spring: www.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/transportation/speedwatch.asp The SpeedWatch Residential Streets and School Zone programs rely on volunteers who borrow a speed reader board (a device that shows the speed limit and the speed of drivers), set it up and monitor drivers in areas of their community or school zones. The equipment is loaned for a one-week period and requires two volunteers to attend at all times. The Manitoba Association of School Trustees (MAST) is also a partner in the SpeedWatch School Zone program. For more information about these programs you may call 204-985-8737.
BHSA business:

We are still looking for more volunteers for various school committees. For a description of committees and how they function, visit our website.
Finding new lunch program coordinators will be addressed in the beginning of next year (2012).
A big thank-you to all the parents who helped out with the family dance, by baking or working a shift, and just by bringing the kids out for a night of fun!

Meeting Recap from September 27th

• Mrs. Compayre stated that we now have 203 students, 14 teachers, and 10 EA’s. We are hiring a part-time receptionist to help Mrs. Edgar.
• Concrete completed over the summer, too many tripping hazards.
• Art work from our students will be on display at the board office for the month of October. Please visit the Piece of Mind Gallery. Parents who have children with artwork being displayed will be notified.
• We earned Earth II status late last year, and the school board is providing us with a tree to celebrate our accomplishment.
• There was discussion about having all new computers throughout the school by the end of the year.
• Discussion about having Block parents representative in the school to discuss with the children block parents, and safety.
• Discussion about offering parents Tupperware at a reduced price.
• Lana gave the treasurer report. We have a goal of trying to donate the same amount to the school at the end of the year.
• Discussed fall family dance, still looking for volunteers to help make it a success. Raffling off, some awesome seats to a jets game. Parents are to accompany their children to the school dance, and costumes are optional.
• Discussed having a silver collection rather than charging for the dance. Anyone wanting to donate, can do so the night off and all proceeds go to Home and School.
• Discussed Lunch Program, the deficit is almost paid off. Deanna and Connie are retiring their positions at the end of this year, and are seeking future parents for the positions. We have 95 full time students, and 54 casual cards in the lunch program currently.
• Susan proposed that lunch program wait until mid year and resubmit idea of donating $500 for recess equipment. There was some confusion as to why the $500.00 allocated to the school for recess equipment in June was not distributed by the school. The admin in attendance made note that $500.00 of the $3000.00 given in June is to go towards recess equipment.
• Deanna motioned to increase lunch program wages. Erin seconded, motion passed.
• No chairs to report
• There was discussion about the various committees in need of volunteers; Spring Fling, Traffic Safety, Community Events and Special Events. A few parents in attendance offered to help out with Special Events, Community Events and Traffic Safety.
• Susan proposed that Home and School buy a popcorn maker for Community Events and the school for $79.99 at London Drugs. Brenda seconded and the motion was passed.
• Susan suggested that families that use the lunch program be made aware of coming lunch program changes, namely that Connie and Deanna will be leaving the program after this school year. A special meeting dealing with the lunch program was suggested to be call more. More information to be announced.
• Dates for upcoming meetings were set for the 3rd Tuesday of every second month. Tuesday November 15t, January 17, March 20 and May 15. The date for AGM is TBA.
• Upcoming Events from home and school are Thursday, October 20th, Tuesday, December 6th, and Tuesday, Feb 28th. The spring fling is tentatively planned for Thursday, May 31st providing we have volunteers while in place prior to this date.

For those of you interested in helping out on the various Home & School committees, here is a little information on what the committees are, and what they do:

Spring Fling Committee: Helps to organize games, food, entertainment, prizes and volunteers for the annual spring carnival.

Traffic Committee: Works to encourage parents to follow traffic and parking rules outside of the school.

Community Events: Helps in the planning of various community events, such as fall dances and movie nights. Helps to gather volunteers, baking items and raffle items.

Special Events: The special events committee organizes Teacher Appreciation Week, Graduation events, etc.

Playground Committee: This is a very new committee that would be working closely with the school to help get the playground revitalization off the ground.

Welcome Back! (The 2011 Version)

On behalf of Beaverlodge Home & School, welcome back! It’s going to be an exciting year of working together to help make Beaverlodge a great place for our kids! If you’re new to our site, or just not sure what BHSA does, here is a brief explanation.

Beaverlodge Home and School organizes fundraising to help furnish the school with various needed items. For example, Home & School money has gone towards the purchase of Smart Boards, recess equipment and extra classroom supplies
BHSA provides funding for patrols, 5&6 camp, and field trip transportation for whole school.
organizes special events such as Teacher Appreciation and Grade 6 graduation.
provides “Special Lunch” for students.
Beaverlodge Home & School helps to oversee the Beaverlodge Lunch Program.
BHSA provides free and family oriented community events such as movie nights and family dances.

BHSA relies on parents to come out to meetings, support fundraising endeavours and volunteer their time when asked. Without further parent support, Beaverlodge Home and School cannot continue to operate.

Lunch Program Update

The Beaverlodge Lunch Program is entering a year of transition, as our current coordinators have indicated that this will be their final year. BLP is looking for people interested in assuming the coordinator position. Lunch Program is also always in need of substitute supervisors, so if you are interested in making a little extra money and would like more info, please contact the school.

Remember, our next meeting is Tuesday, September 27th 7:00 in the library! See you then!

June Update

Dear Beaverlodge Families,

On behalf of Beaverlodge Home and School Association, we would like to send out a message of thanks to the families that supported our various fundraising and family fun projects throughout the school year. We began the year with the goal of offering free and fun community centered events throughout the year while raising money to help improve the learning environment of our kids. With the help of a small, yet mightily dedicated volunteer group who shared our focus on making it “all about the kids”, we achieved that goal.

On top of the regular donations Home and School makes to Beaverlodge (field trip funds, classroom funds, patrols, special events, etc), BHSA was able to raise enough money to provide the school with funds for another Smart Board, recess equipment and “green” initiatives this year. We are pleased to make these contributions that all Beaverlodge children will enjoy and benefit from on behalf of Beaverlodge families.

The Beaverlodge Home and School Annual General Meeting will be held Monday June 13^that 7:00 in the library. The final budget for the 2011-2012 school year will be voted on, as well as elections for next year’s Home and School executive committee will be held. We strongly encourage parents to attend and help guide the direction of Beaverlodge Home and School for the 2011-2012 school year. Current members of the BHSA executive will be vacating their positions, and continued parental involvement will be needed to ensure that the BHSA continue on as an organization.

Again, thank-you families, for a wonderful year. It has been a pleasure to work with you and your kids, and we hope you enjoyed the year as much as we did!

Here is a brief synopsis of the Home and School meeting that took place on March 21.

Mrs. Compayre gave an informative presentation of our school division expectations and policies. For further information, please see the meetings minutes to read over her complete report. Please also refer the April School Newsletter for changes to school entry for parents and visitors.
The Special Events Committee still needs help with Staff Appreciation week! It’s not too late to help out! Feel free to send some goodies to school this week as a nice treat for the Beaverlodge Staff!
Connie and Deanna gave an up to date report on the Beaverlodge Lunch Program. Please refer to meeting minutes.
Spring Fling desperately needs volunteers! We require one person from each classroom to help make phone calls to fellow parents to recruit some help to fill various half hour shifts. Spring Fling is our biggest fundraiser, and we are counting on parent support to make it a success!
Lana gave an overview of where our account stands. Thankfully it’s all in the black, so that’s always good news.
BHSA made a budget proposal presentation for the 2011-2012 school year. This is for you to review, and will be voted on during the May 16th meeting. Please look this document over in the meeting minutes.
Home & School has been asked to resurrect the Traffic Committee. If your are interested in helping with this project, let us know. We have a few fun ideas of how to get everyone involved with the goal of keeping our kids safe!

We had a little trouble with the downloads, so you will see a new folder entitled “March 2011″; there you will find the meetings minutes, and reports from various committees.

It’s Time For A Shout Out!

Wow! It’s March! Spring is just around the corner…I think. At least it should be, so let’s just hold on to that hope, shall we? It’s been an exciting and interesting year for our school and for the BHSA. A lot of people have put forth a great deal of work and effort, all voluntarily, to make our school an extra special place to be, so I would just like to take a few minutes to bring some recognition to these lovely people.

Brenda Reid is our dedicated community events/fundraising coordinator. She is the one who does all the behind the scenes work to pull together the Fall Dance, Movie Night, Luau, Spring Fling and all of our fundraising efforts. The goal of the BHSA this year was to (pardon my Flanderism) “put the fun back into fundraising” by providing fun family events that would hopefully bring in a little change ($$) as opposed to sending you out into the cold to sell, sell, sell. We hoped to increase community spirit just as much as BHSA coffers, and I think Brenda has managed to do just that. So thank-you, Brenda, for putting together these events, recruiting volunteers, organizing and collecting raffle prizes, and for everything else that you!!

Liz Forrest so kindly organizes special lunches for our kids to enjoy, giving us a brief reprieve from having to pack lunches for a day! Liz works hard to plan the special meals, organize order forms, deliver the food to the classrooms, scout out the best deals on juice and snacks, and best of all she does it all with a smile! Her hard work is appreciated by many hungry children and overworked mothers!

Lana Christie is our treasurer for the BHSA. She is the one who keeps our books balanced, and is a money counter extraordinaire! Being treasurer is a thankless task, but it is a crucial part of keeping the BHSA running smoothly. So thank-you Lana, for the countless trips to the bank and the hours spent working on spreadsheets!!

Jennifer Best is secretary for the BHSA. With the skill and versatility of a stenographer, she keeps record of every home & school meeting, diligently preparing and posting them for all parents to read. Thanks, Jennifer, for keeping us organized!

Jacqueline LeDrew voluntarily takes charge of special events for the school, such as teacher appreciation luncheon and Grade 6 graduation. Jacqueline is also responsible for framing and hanging all those lovely art displays that beautify the school hallways. We all stop to admire our childrens works of art, but probably not many of us wonder who took the time to frame and hang those pictures, so now you know who to thank!

Valerie Christie and Susan Cook are the co-chairs for the BHSA. We’re not sure what they do, but they sure are cute!

We would also like to thank Connie O’ Connor & Deanna Hinson for all the hard work and time they dedicate to running Beaverlodge Lunch Program. These ladies keep the lunch program humming along quite nicely, despite facing some overwhelming obstacles at times. I don’t think they bill us for nearly all the hours they put in, so thank-you ladies for all that you do!

Thank-you to Mrs.Compayre, Mrs. Edgar and Mrs. Juchnowski for their constant support of the BHSA. Their assistance is much relied on, and their willingness to lend a hand whenever needed might be taken for granted more often then it should. Thanks ladies!

One last thank-you goes out to all the parents who support our endeavours! We thank-you for baking, for buying, for selling, for volunteering and for showing up!

Luau Tomorrow!!

Our school dance/luau is tomorrow night from 6-8 in the school gym. We still have a few 30 minute shifts that we need to fill, so if you are available, please contact us or leave a message with the office. Pull out the tank tops and flip flops and we’ll see you for an awesome time tomorrow night!!
